Across Wyoming, the Mormon Pioneer Trail shares a broad historic corridor with the Oregon and California trails and, in places, the Pony Express. The strongest trip treats each landmark as part of overlapping histories rather than a stand-alone attraction.

Begin east of the central corridor

Register Cliff and the Oregon Trail Ruts near Guernsey preserve names, grooves and physical evidence of overland travel. These are shared-trail sites, important to several migrations and not exclusively part of one group’s story.

Follow the Sweetwater landmarks

Independence Rock, Devil’s Gate and Split Rock helped travelers measure progress across an immense landscape. Established sites and official interpretation make it possible to understand the landmarks without disturbing fragile historic traces.

Continue toward South Pass

Martin’s Cove, Sixth Crossing, Rocky Ridge and South Pass connect the route to the Willie and Martin handcart companies and the difficult 1856 season. Check current access, hours and visitor guidance before setting out; the distances remain substantial.

Know before you go: Conditions, access, operating hours and regulations can change. Confirm important details with official land managers, parks and local organizations.
